Northcoast Signworks uses a variety of quality substrates and finishes to produce durable and impactful dimensional signs. Many factors go into our recommendation, including aesthetics, durability, longevity, and budget constraints.

High Density Urethane (HDU).

This man-made substrate has been used as a wood substitute in the housing industry for over 30 years, and most exterior millwork on new buildings is created out of HDU. The scarcity and low quality of redwood as well as finding a product to withstand the expansion and contraction associated with natural products in colder climates makes HDU our most commonly recommended substrate. Since HDU does not expand or contract appreciably, the paint cracking and failure normally found in wood signs does not apply. This material is available in almost any thickness. It is easily carved and sculpted, and it can also be beautifully painted and finished for a variety of looks and effects.

Corian

DuPont's solid surface substrate is normally associated with countertops, but many of the same attributes that make Corian such a success in commercial and residential kitchens and baths also applies to signage. It is extremely difficult to damage and easily cleaned, making it the substrate of choice for high-traffic and vandalism-prone areas. From a design standpoint, Corian offers a plethora of color choices and is available in granite, stone, marble and other natural finishes. Because it is an acrylic slab stock, it machines beautifully on our CNC router equipment. This enables us to create stunning signage with wood working tools that appear to be carved in stone. Entrance signs into developments and municipalities, office lobby identification, landscape and park markings, dedication and memorial plaques as well as way-finding systems are perfect uses for this material. It accepts paints, gold leaf and metal letters to compliment the Corian for a truly memorable sign.

Layered Plastic / PolyCarve

This is a recycled plastic substrate that consists of a 1/8" front and back color and a 1/2" center color. Carving through the first color and into the second creates graphics and lettering. The substrate is highly UV resistant, can actually take a puncture from a gun shot and is very resistant to paint and solvents. For areas that are prone to vandalism, or need a background that is durable and flexible, this fits the bill. Call for color availability.

Foam PVC

This material is both carveable on its own and an excellent substitute for MDO plywood for many projects. Foam PVC is a durable yet cost-effective solution for a variety of signage needs. It is available in a wide array of colors and thicknesses. Its smooth surface accepts pressure-sensitive vinyl. For signs that are only 2-D and decorated in vinyl or digital prints, this is the substrate we most-often recommend.
